Question and Answer with Island Exclusive

1. What is the meaning behind your name Island Exclusive and how would you describe an exclusive experience ?

A. When we talk about 'Exclusive', we mean like there's a group of basic people and then there's a group of the exclusive ones. So as Exclusive as we are, we kinda think that we're different, that's why we're exclusive. The place that we were staying at is called 'Island', which is in Philipi East, Cape Town. So I could say an exclusive experience would be where we grew up and through music we learned to like it.

2. How did you guys meet and what made you start a crew?

A. We met in the streets, back in Cape Town, in a small area called Island in Philipi East. We were still in high school when we met up with Vuyo, he was freestyling and doing something that we liked. Vuyo was already into music and we didn't even know anything, but we were writing songs, so by the time we met up with him, we put our ideas together. We then met up with Slompo Drega and he was cool with the movement. Then we met this other guy called Red X, people were like "you guys sound good together, why don't you form a crew or something." That's how we became Island Exclusive, because we're from Island.

3. How can you describe the type of your sound to any potential new fan?

A. The thing is, when I met with these guys, they all had a different sound, Vuyo had a different style, Manu had a different sound, Joe, Red X, we all came in different styles. I'm from Zimbabwe, Red X is from Congo and Vuyo is South African. We are the new face of Africa, we're our own kind, we don't follow what other people are doing. As we said that we had a vision, we choosing to go our own way, no matter how tough it is, we're trying to bring a great different sound to the whole universe.

4. What song are you currently pushing and how has the reaction been since it dropped?

A. The song that we're currently pushing is called 'Drip', this song is for the new generation and the old generation. This is not only about the material drip, if you put your ears on this song you can conceive a message that could change your life. Joe 3rd is there on the chorus, I'm there on the first verse, Slompo is there on the second verse and Phil degap is there on the last verse. The reaction has been good so far, people have been saying the song is dope, they like it and some are already asking us to do some visuals for it. So soon it's going to be there, and you'll be jamming to it. Drip, Drip, Drip.

5. Who produced the song and what kind of input did you have when making it?

A. I'm the one who produced the song but it has more input from my crew, they're the ones that made this song dope. When I made the beat I never thought it was gonna end up like that, I thought this song was gonna be some hardcore thing, but my niggas put some kind of vibe to it that I like. Slompo is the one who was chilling in studio with me when I made the beat, Joe was not there, so we started by making the verses before we did the chorus ,that's why I say this song is different because we got different styles.

6. Any theme of mood you were trying to capture when you made this song?

A. We were tryna get teenagers, like, the type of vibe when your mom buys you new shoes or when you get something new, that feeling to show off. This is the type of vibe we were trying to catch, when you're dressed up, ready to go out, with some headphones on, feeling the drip, like there's no one who can touch you.
This song is to put you in that mood,
you know, if you ain't dripping you drowning.
Even if you don't have drip you can still jam to this. You don't have to go look for a chain or shades, you can still dance and jam to this song. It involves everyone.

7. What is your fondest musical moment?

A. That moment was when we moved from Cape Town to come to Pretoria to come push music. For me I can say it was when we went on stage for the first time, we didn't know how the fans were gonna react to our performance , but they appreciated us so I felt welcomed and felt some support. For me is when we went on SABC News Africa, that moment reminds me of back in the days when I used to wake up around 7 o'clock to prepare for school and my mom would always tell me to take it to the news...So she'd put it on SABC News, the same channel we went on. From way back I always wanted be there, and we actually went there so I was like, "oh this is how it goes."

8. Anything you'd like to add?

What we can tell you is that we are coming, and drip is not the only song we dropped, there are other songs out already. We also have a Music video with AB Crazy, it's the latest one, It's called Let me Down and the song is there on Vodacom and MTN caller tune.
I hope you enjoy the moment with Island Exclusive as we enjoy the moment with you.
Stay tuned, because there is alot coming up, believe in us, we coming, this is Island Exclusive.
